He’s a goner

It’s done. “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” is finally off the American Idol and no.. I’m not referring to Lord Voldemort of course. I’m referring to Sanjaya Malakar (Yikes.. did I just say he should not be named?). Sanjaya - the would be “wonder kid”, or the next “Teflon Don” - finally ran out of luck.. or perhaps support from his fans and critics.

This young man who was arguably much less talented vocally than the ones voted off before him finally saw his demise last night on American Idol. It was down to Sanjaya and LaKisha Jones.. and you just somehow knew that LaKisha wasn’t about to exit stage left.

You have to hand it to Sanjaya though. Despite his average singing skills, the kid knew how to entertain and he certainly raised it up a notch each week. One could argue that he made American Idol interesting this season. Tuning into Idol became the “What will Sanjaya do this week?”

  • Will he have a new hairdo?
  • Will he dance with Paula again?
  • Will his voice crack on those low notes?
  • Will the crying girl come back?
  • Will someone else actually screw up so bad that Sanjaya will actually look good?

In retrospect, Sanjaya certainly did make Idol interesting again this season. After the auditions were done and we had the top 20 or so contestants, it was pretty clear to many that this wasn’t necessarily the best Idol season yet. There were two standout favorites .. and above all, the women were far better than the men. Then Sanjaya and the VoteForTheWorst.com crew came out - along with Howard Stern and of course the thousands or millions of Sanjaya fans out there and Idol became an entertaining show once again.

So now he’s gone, and I feel a bit of a vacuum inside of me. A bit.. but really not a whole lot. Now.. we can get back to the show at hand and get away from an entertainment competition to a singing competition. If we wanted an entertainment competition, then we’d be watching “America’s Got Talent” wouldn’t we? Hey.. perhaps there’s an idea for Sanjaya.

So kid.. I’ll miss ya..

Ok. no I won’t.
