Brain dead from sports drinks

Here’s an interesting article over at the NYTimes. A study has come out declaring that drinking too much in liquids during excessive physical activity can actually kill you. The reason? Water dilutes blood and can lower the concentration of sodium in your body. Water then enters cells and can cause them to swell - enlarged brain cells can press up against your skull causing confusion, seizures and even death. What’s the best thing? Small concentrations of salt solutions. Sport drinks may not help very much because they contain large quantities of water also. So the next time you’re working up a sweat - think twice before you grab for a super large bottle of Gatorade.
